Decor Insights: Color + Calm = My Dream Home
My new hubby and I are on the hunt to buy our first place. We decided on a condo instead of a house for many reasons, but that’s a different story. As an eclectic person, the idea of decorating my own place is both invigorating and terrifying. Being able to express my taste through my home is wonderfully creative, but I doubt I will ever feel like it is truly “done” – the space will continuously transform (which can be an emotional & financial drain).
Right along my love of opposites, I found two homes recently that really “light my fire” for creating a place of my own. Of course, they are both houses & none of the condos we’ve been looking at are anything like these … but I can dream (and renovate slowly). The first came to me via Desire to Inspire: a Swedish home ( for sale at $1.5 million) that is delightfully colorful.

I found the second home in the July 2009 issue of Country Living (one of my favorite magazines). Clean & crisp, yet cozy at the same time, it is the New Orleans home of Donna Ballard Maselli.

Though the color schemes of these homes are distinctively different, they do share two particular similarities: taller ceilings & more open floor plans … how I love thee!
My ideal home would be:
+ A combination of these two dwelling
+ Less than 2,000 square feet
+ Has 2-3 bedroom, 2 full baths, wood floors, & tall ceilings
+ Near naturally moving water (river, stream, ocean … etc.)
+ Has a sizable yard (for relaxing & a garden) OR near a large public park
+ Close enough to a city that I can bicycle there (but not too “metro”)
+ Likely in Rhode Island, North Carolina, or Sweden (or near Cleveland or Chicago) [though we're buying in Connecticut]

Congratulations on your marriage, Good luck and good speed!
I just saw that Swedish house at Desire to Inspire, and it surly did inspire me. I come from Europe where homes usually are not so large, but modern and well thought trough, it was a delight to see. My house here in Westchester County,NY is not big at all, that I don’t mind but it is not very userfriendly and we do not have the means for an major update…but once we are there all will be green. So far we’re trying to do all the small steps!
I love your approach to ‘things’ in life, have been looking at your blog quite regularly.
Take care and good luck with your home search!

I’m thinking they might be custom tiles … but they are jaw-dropping all the same
Maybe Sweden just had even more amazing designers than we all realize, hehe.

Ahoy (fellow) Victoria! Thank you for taking the time to stop by and for the congrats on my marriage
I’m originally from Indiana, and farmhouses are often pretty sizable, but I’ve always found myself gravitating towards European-style … everything, including house sizes. I live in northern Connecticut, so we aren’t that far from each other.
Going green is all about starting small. Yeah, it would be great if we all could drive a hybrid, run on our own solar panels, and grow all our own food, but that is the ideal … you have to “grow” into that (pun intended). The fact that you have started to go green is the best part!

Thank you, you are right, we try to live the reduce, reuse, receycle method for almost everything in our life, apart from love and compassion to share…
I love to refurbish old furniture…
PS: Did you hear of ‘Green demolitions’? It’s a company who removes old kitchens and bath and brings them to life elsewhere…what a great idea. I believe they are out of Conneticut! They also install what you choose to buy from them. At extremly reasonable prices.
Thought you might like to know, since your home shopping!

Where do I become a follower of your blog? Couldn’t find the right button…
I do not want more e-mails… : )

I don’t do enough refurbishing old furniture, but with the purchase of our first house/condo on the horizon, it is certainly something I will be working more into. I have heard of the process of green demolitions before (love it!) & have been to a few salvage places here in CT, but I don’t think I’ve been to the one you are talking about – I’ll have to visit.
P.S. If you don’t want to get the feed via e-mail, you’ll have to add the feed to an RSS reader (like Google Reader) and check it regularly to see if something posted. If you don’t already use a feed reader for other blogs, it would be much easier to just get updates via e-mail.
